Nabam Atum, a former President of the Indigenous Faith & Culture Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP), former Chairman of the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC), and former President of the Nyishi Nyidung Mwngjwng Rallung (NNMR), active politician was passed away today. He was a leading pioneer and an impeccable warrior of the indigenous religion consciousness movement among the First Nation Society in Arunachal Pradesh.
A founding member of Nyedar Namlo, Atum was known for his selfless dedication to social work and his fierce commitment to preserving the state’s indigenous faith and traditional practices. His efforts made significant contributions to the cultural preservation and religious awareness in the landlocked state.
In a statement expressing deep sorrow and grief Nyishi Elite Society (NES) President Tana Showren, a close admirer highlighted Atum’s rare feat of sacrificial dedication to the cause of indigenous faith. “I convey my deepest sympathy and condolence to the bereaved family members and pray to AANV DONYI to give them strength during this difficult time. Words seem inadequate; may AANV DONYI give solace to the departed soul and may he Rest In Peace.”
The Indigenous Faith & Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) is deeply shocked and saddened by the premature demise of Nabam Atum, former President of IFCSAP, who passed away at his residence in Doimukh on May 23, 2024.
Born in 1948 to Late Nabam Epo and Late Nabam Yeni, Nabam Atum was a prominent figure in the preservation of the Donyi-Polo faith among the Nyishi people. His efforts were instrumental during a time when the community was unaware of how to protect their age-old traditions from extinction.
After graduating, Atum served for eight years as the District Information and Public Relations Officer. During his tenure, he traveled extensively across the Nyishi-dominated areas of the then undivided Lower Subansiri District, educating locals about the importance of embracing their cultural rituals and heritage.
In 1999, Nabam Atum was a key figure in the formation of IFCSAP and remained deeply involved in the promotion of indigenous faith across various tribes in Arunachal Pradesh. His leadership roles included serving as the President of the Arunachal Vikas Parishad Trust from 1997 to 2010 and as the President of IFCSAP from 2007 to 2010. His efforts helped synchronize the activities of both organizations, significantly advancing the movement to preserve indigenous faith.
Additionally, Atum was a founding member of the Donyi-Polo Nyedar Namlo of Nyishi and the Chief Advisor of the Nyishi Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society (NIFCS). His dedication to the cause was evident through various training programs for priests and his efforts to motivate the youth.
For his contributions to social and human service, Nabam Atum received the national One India Award in 2012 and the IFCSAP Rana Award in 2016.
The IFCSAP held a condolence meeting on May 23, 2024, at their office in Chimpu, Itanagar, where President Er. Katung Wahge conveyed sincere condolences to Nabam Atom’s bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of his soul.
His Last rite will be performed on May 25 at his Doimukh residence.
