Rape-attempt on Arunachalee woman, FIR lodged at Assam’s Behali PS

NAHARLAGUN, Jul 25: An FIR has been lodged at Behali police station inAssam’s Sonitpur by an Arunachalee woman alleging that she became a victim of rape attempt at Behali on July 20, 2023 when she went there to visit her brother-in-law’s house.

According to the victim’s statement, a day after the incident, shelodged an FIR at the Behali PS but the case was registered only on July 24, 2023 after the intervention from a team of Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society (APWWS), human rights and other activists, who met the Officer-in-Charge of the Behali PS.

While sharing the incident with the media, the victim informed that on July 20, 2023 at around 11.30 pm, an unknown person attempted to rape when she was staying at her brother-in-law’s house at Behali in Assam.

The victim alleged that when her cousin sister and brother-in-law went out of the house for medical treatment, she was attempted to rape by a person by putting a pillow on her face. The alleged accused was also punched, slapped and tried to squeeze her mouth, she said. In order to protect herself, she had bitten the finger of the culprit at which the perpetrator yelled in pain and cried out ‘Porsu Da…Porsu Da’. She suspected that someone in the name of ‘Porsu Da’, accompanied the culprit and was waiting outside the house.

A day after the incident, the victim went for a medical checkup and also went to the Behali police station in Sonitpur. She lodged a complaint at the PS but the case was registered on that day.

As her case was not registered, seeking support, the victim on July 23, 2023 called up the general secretary of Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society, Ziro Branch, Adv. Hibu Usha.

Accordingly, the APWWS Ziro branch contacted Adv. Kani Nada Maling, president of the central executive committee of Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society (APWWS), Itanagar immediately and on July 24, 2023, a team of APWWS, human rights and other activists departed for Behali police station to take stock of the case.

While sharing this information with the media, Kani Nada Maling also said, “After our intervention, the case was registered instantly and mandatory medical checkup of the victim was carried out by the police, besides the victim’s statement was recorded.”Maling further informed that they also visited the place of occurrence along with the police. However, the alleged accused is yet to be arrested.
